Monkton 250th Anniversary Celebration

The Monkton 250th Anniversary Celebration on June 24th has something for everyone! Events start with a 5K run at 10 AM followed by a parade from Monkton Ridge to the Elementary School with a BBQ to follow.  After the parade, there will be  a time capsule dedication and a tree planting on Morse Park.  The Boy Scouts will have a presentation of their learned activities, a rocket launch and more at Morse Park.   It is also the Russell Memorial Library’s 25th annual Strawberry Festival and book sale, which will start at noon and end at 3:00 P.M. at the Monkton Central School. Of course there will be that wonderful strawberry shortcake to eat, plus hot dogs, salad and drinks for lunch.  There will also be music from 1-3 P.M. with the old timey band called “Run Mountain”.  Follow the link for more information on all the great events!

Have you gotten your tickets to Monkton’s 250th Celebration  Chicken BBQ yet?  If not, call Pete Aube at 453-2700 (e-mail blackdogcoal40@yahoo.com) or Charlie Huizenga at 877-2888 to get your tickets.  The price is $8 for adults and $5 for children under the age of 8 until June 10th.  After that date, the price goes up to $10 for adults and $6 for children under eight. Get your tickets now for this great menu of one half a chicken, potato salad, cole slaw, rolls, lemonade and coffee.  There will also be various music, play area for the children, plus games, great conversation and that wonderful feeling of comradeship among area townspeople. The BBQ will begin at 5:00 P.M., the grand finale of a day of events starting at 8:00 A.M..

First to kick off the day’s events will be the 5K Race hosted by Monkton’s 250th  Celebration and sponsored by Road ID.  If you go to their website, www.roadid.com and click on ‘events’, you will find information about the race there.   The race will be held on Pond Road with registration from 7:00-7:45 A.M. on Pond Road. Race entry fee is- kids 10 and under free, $10 for kids older and seniors citizens, $20 for adults.  There will be prize drawings. Following the race, at 10:00 A.M., the parade will start with a flag raising and dedication at the Town Hall.  The parade route will start at the north end of Monkton Ridge from Davis Road, proceed south through the Ridge and continue west to the Monkton Central School.

Please be aware that during this time, adjacent roads will be blocked off and detoured.  If you need to travel through this area on June 24th, you may want to take note of the detour routes which will be posted at a later date.

If you have an interest to be in the parade, registration forms are available at the Monkton Town Hall, Monkton General Store and Russell Memorial Library.  You can also go onto the 250th Celebration website to get a form at monkton250@gmail.com and submit it there.  If you pick up a form, you may mail it to Monkton 250 Parade Registration, P.O. Box 12, Monkton, VT 05469.  After your registration is received, you will be contacted with more information.  There is no fee to be in the parade so come and join in on the fun.  All area towns are invited to be in the parade with your fire trucks, any motor vehicle, bikes, trikes, baby carriage, animals, pets, bands, singers, performers of any kind to help Monkton celebrate our birthday.

If you are a senior citizen of Monkton, you are invited to be in the parade.  Transportation in the parade will be provided for you if needed. You may contact this correspondent at 453-2180 with names or for information.

Also, all veterans are invited to be in the parade. You may contact Pete or Caroline Aube with names of any veteran that you know at 453-2700.  If you know a senior citizen or veteran, please let them know they are invited to be in this parade.

The Library welcomes and appreciates any book donations you can give for the book sale, which will be held in the Monkton Central School gym. They cannot accept textbooks, encyclopedias or Readers Digest Condensed Books.  Please drop your donations off during regular library hours (Tuesday 3-8, Friday 9-1 or Saturday 9-2) or call 453-4471 to make an appointment for someone to meet you to get the donation, or if you have questions.  Your donations should not be left on the porch when the library isn’t open as it may be damaged by the weather.  Thank you for your cooperation at this request!

Many other happenings will be going on at the school on June 24th.  There will be displays, photo stories, Monkton’s cancelled stamp presented, games, art displays and much more.  Mark your calendars for June 24th to be part of this grand celebration of Monkton’s 250th Charter Birthday!!
