Highway Department Projects

Construction Season 2024 Projects:

Month of April 2024

Please note: the Town of Monkton’s roads are still posted for travel. Throughout the month of April, as we hope the winter season storms have came to an end, the highway department will be starting our construction season. Our first plan is to rehab Roscoe Road. We will be ditching, clearing shoulders, adding new base, and then top dressing the road with gravel. On top of this, we will be continuously cutting brush and clearing out the canopies of trees to minimize the amount of shade throughout the roads and allow them to dry quicker. As always, we will continue to mitigate potholes throughout the 60 miles of asphalt and dirt roads.

Throughout the next few months the crew will be doing a lot of training hours with Vermont Local Roads to gather more experience on the best practices to maintain the asphalt and gravel roads, learn new techniques with the department’s equipment to become more efficient, and collect resources within surrounding towns to improve community relations and efficiency.

We will also be posting a job opening for a part time summer employee, which we will utilize to mainly run the roadside mowing operations throughout the summer. With this, we will be able to use our full crew on construction projects and grading allowing us to be more efficient and complete projects quicker. If you are interested in this position, please feel free to reach out to the highway foreman to inquire details.

Month of March 2024

In Vermont, the springtime months are considered “mud season”. As of February 26, 2024, the Town of Monkton’s roads are posted for travel. This means that trucks, mentioned on the home page, exceeding the weight limit are not permitted for travel through town roads. Any questions or concerns, we ask you to reach out to the Highway Garage at (802) 453-3263.

Over the next month, the highway department’s goal is to mitigate not only potholes on the asphalt and gravel roads, but to proactively fix problematic mud locations. In addition to this, we are gearing up for a busy spring and summer, which we are going through each piece of equipment to ensure we can be as efficient as possible throughout the year. We are also continually cutting and removing brush along the roadsides to widen roadsides and increase visibility.

Although we are gearing up for springtime, please remember that in the past we’ve had some of the bigger storms of the year in March. We ask all drivers and residents to monitor the weather in case of a storm arises and prepare their day in accordance with such.

Month of February 2024

Our projects over the next couple of weeks can be affected at any moment due to staffing shortages, equipment failures and the weather.

That said and looking at a good stretch of weather, our plan is to work on road conditions and mitigate pothole conditions on the asphalt and gravel roads. Addition to this, we will continue to be cutting brush from the roadsides, along with regular scheduled maintenance.

As per usual, please use caution when driving. Watching the weather to understand whether or not you should leave a few minutes early in the morning to make sure you arrive to your destination safely and in a timely manner is crucial.
