Community Center public meeting Tuesday 11/19 at Monkon Central School

This Tuesday November 19th, the Monkton Municipal Building Committee will convene another community outreach meeting when Chris Huston and Leah McGavern from Bellwether Architects will present two conceptual designs for you to consider and discuss. We will also provide an update on estimated project costs and how much impact this is likely to have on your property taxes. Feedback from this meeting will be used to focus these ideas into a single design proposal with itemized cost estimates, which we will vote on in March. Now is your best chance to weigh in! For more information about the project so far, link to http://monktonvt.com/boards-and-committees/municipal-building-committee/

Please join us and many of your neighbors for our second Community Outreach Meeting this Tuesday, November 19th at 6:00 p.m. at the Monkton Central School, to review Bellwether’s initial design concepts and to add your thoughts. Once again, pizza and cold beverages will be served.

UPDATE: North End of Mountain Rd Closing 11/20/19

The north end of Mountain Rd will be closed to through traffic from 7 AM to 5 PM on Wednesday, November 20, 2019 to make temporary repairs to a failed culvert.

Expect local traffic only on the paved section of Mountain Rd from the intersection with States Prison Hollow Rd south to Preston Lane. There will be no through traffic over the large culvert approximately 1/2 mile south of States Prison Hollow Rd (approximately 50 yards north of where the pavement switches to dirt). Traffic will be restored when the temporary repairs are completed.

UPDATE (11/18/19): The road will remain open long enough Wednesday morning for the school bus to pass at about 7:20 AM. It is highly unlikely that the work will be completed in time for the school bus’ afternoon trip down Mountain Rd. (Betcha has been notified, as has Monkton Central School, and MAUSD.)

Trash Collection Rates at Recycling Drop-off

Steve Smith of PDS Waste has decided to retire from Saturday pickup at the recycling drop-off.  Starting at the next recycling date on Saturday November 9th , trash collection will be done by Moose Rubbish instead of PDS Waste.  This will result in a small increase in trash collection rates and expanded services.  The price charged for bags is based somewhat on weight but in general it will cost $5.00 for 30 to 45 gallon bags and $3.00 for 13 to 20 gallon bags.  In addition, Moose will except food scraps at $1.00 per pail and $2.00 and up for yard waste depending on the amount (a bag of leaves would be $2.00).

Building Committee Update

Thank you to all the community members who attended the initial public outreach meeting that took place on September 26th.  In addition to having an opportunity to meet with Bellwether Architects (BA), the architects of the new Community Center, there was a lively and productive question and answer session. In addition to oral feedback, any written responses to questions provided by BA about the design, layout and the community’s aspirations for the new building were received.  The building committee has read all of these responses and heard the community’s concerns that the building be cost efficient, energy efficient, and that it should have historically appropriate architecture. They also heard comments that it should be filled with natural light, should maximize advantages of the site, and should be “inspirational.” Continue reading
