Pond Brook watershed project

Hello everyone,

Over the summer, a University of Vermont Field Naturalist Graduate Student, Lyra Brennan, will be exploring and cataloging ecological communities of the Pond Brook watershed, which lays largely between the Bristol Road and Mountain Road, but which also includes both of the Hogbacks and runs into Bristol and Starksboro. She would like to get permission to go on some private lands in that area, as well as on town property, so may be contacting you by phone or email.

Next winter Lyra will do a presentation of her work to the town. She will also be providing the information to the town in a report, and a GIS map.

For more information about Lyra and the UVM Field Naturalist Program please visit:

Please let us know if you have any concerns, or would prefer not to be contacted. Our email is: ANAC@monktonvt.com or leave a message for ANAC with Sharon Gomez, the Town Clerk at 453-3800.

This post is provided for the convenience of Monkton residents. The official website for the Town of Monkton is http://monktonvt.com/

Pentachlorophenol draft report

In the fall of 2014, the Public Service Board (PSB) appointed a Working Group to investigate the use of pentachlorophenol on utility poles.  Part of the motivation for the investigation was that a drinking water spring in Monkton was badly contaminated by pentachlorophenol as the result of pole replacement activity by VELCO during their power line upgrade along the course of the pipeline construction route.  The Town of Monkton requested and was granted that a representative from the Town be included on the Working Group, which was composed of four state agencies or departments, four utility representatives, and four other stakeholders.  In July of 2015 the Work Group finalized a draft report, which was then reviewed internally by the Agency of Natural Resources staff and counsel.  The final draft report was submitted to the PSB on April 27, 2016, and has been posted to the PSB’s website (http://psb.vermont.gov/docketsandprojects/electric/8310).

The public comment period is open until June 8, 2016; please feel free to contact Monkton’s representative on the Working Group Deb Gaynor (dgaynor@monktonvt.com) with questions, and please do submit comments on the report to the PSB.

Selectboard approves conservation of Cota Farm

The Selectboard unanimously approved the spending of $100,000 from the Agricultural and Natural Areas fund to support conserving 218 acres of the Cota farm on States Prison Hollow Road.  This spending is conditional on the project being approved by the Vermont Housing and Conservation Board and the financing of the remainder of the project budget.

P1050284

The Selectboard agrees wholeheartedly with the assessment of the Agricultural and Natural Areas Committee that this farm contains some of the best agricultural resources in Monkton and that conserving it agrees with the mission statement of the ANAC committee and the Monkton Town Plan in maintaining an open and vibrant working landscape.

Thanks to the ANAC committee for their hard work and to the voters of Monkton who have repeatedly approved funding for this type of conservation.

Testing of Water Wells by Vermont Gas

Written into the Memo of Understanding between the Town of Monkton and Vermont Gas is the option for any resident within 300 feet of the pipeline or within 600 feet of any blasting to get their well tested.  This testing is done by Continental Placer and should consist of test of water quality and flow.  Getting your well tested is informative in itself but it also allows you redress if there are any changes to your well water quality or flow during the construction process.  When Continental Placer comes to do the well testing make sure that they take water from a source prior to any filtration system you might have.
