Dear Monkton Community,
At our October 22nd meeting, the Selectboard voted unanimously to create an ad hoc advisory committee focused on improving attendance and participation at Monkton town meeting. The Vermont League of Cities and Towns (VLCT) recommends that selectboards formally adopt a written charge when creating an ad hoc committee, so one is outlined:
Purpose: Increase attendance and participation at Monkton Town Meeting from registered Monkton voters. This should be done by conducting outreach to Monkton voters, identifying current barriers to participation and attendance, studying best practices from other towns, and proposing solutions for the 2027 Town Meeting.
Membership: 9 Total Members
2 Justices of the Peace (1 from each party)
7 registered Monkton voters
Task deadlines and expectations for final deliverable: Provide a written recommendation to the Monkton Selectboard no later than January 13th, 2027 with at least three concrete action steps for the Town to implement for 2027 Town Meeting.
Requirements of Ad Hoc Committees:
Follow Vermont Open Meeting Law: All meetings of an ad hoc committee must be properly warned, open to the public, and documented with written minutes.
Follow Public Records Act: Any documents, data, emails, or reports generated or utilized by the committee are public records and subject to disclosure.
