The Monkton Conservation Commission and the Lewis Creek Association have been awarded the Federal Higway Administration (FHWA) 2017 Environmental Excellence Award.  The award recognizes their exemplary achievement in Ecosystems, Habitat and Wildlife.  Quoting directly from the award letter:

“Specifically,we recognize MCC’s commitment to identify innovative and emerging techniques that restore and preserve the integrity and function of an ecosystem.  The Town of Monkton is home to one of the largest and most diverse amphibian populations in the northeastern United States, a population that must cross the Monkton-Vergennes Road each spring to breed in the Champlain Valley wetlands.” … “The project is an example of grassroots collaborative work that successfully mitigated an ecological problem”
