North End of Mountain Road Closing Thursday, Dec 5

The north end of Mountain Rd will be closed to through traffic on Thursday, December 5, 2019, to make more lasting repairs to the large culvert which was temporarily repaired on Nov. 20

Expect local traffic only on the paved section of Mountain Rd from the intersection with States Prison Hollow Rd south to Preston Lane. The road will remain passable to allow the school bus through at approximately 7:20 AM. After that, there will be no through traffic over the large culvert approximately 1/2 mile south of States Prison Hollow Rd (approximately 50 yards north of where the pavement switches to dirt). Traffic will be restored when the repairs are completed.

The hope is to complete this repair in one day. If things go well, there is a chance it will be reopened for the afternoon/evening commute, but no guarantees. If the contractor uncovers unexpected problems, it could take longer.

NOTE: We are replacing the culvert with the same size and type as was removed. Due to new regulations since that culvert was originally installed, the state will not accept this as a permanent repair. Sometime this summer, it will have to be replaced with a larger box culvert. The lead time and installation of that is much longer. The concern is that the temporary repairs made a couple of weeks ago will not last until then, thus the new culvert going in on Thursday.

Community Center public meeting Tuesday 11/19 at Monkon Central School

This Tuesday November 19th, the Monkton Municipal Building Committee will convene another community outreach meeting when Chris Huston and Leah McGavern from Bellwether Architects will present two conceptual designs for you to consider and discuss. We will also provide an update on estimated project costs and how much impact this is likely to have on your property taxes. Feedback from this meeting will be used to focus these ideas into a single design proposal with itemized cost estimates, which we will vote on in March. Now is your best chance to weigh in! For more information about the project so far, link to http://monktonvt.com/boards-and-committees/municipal-building-committee/

Please join us and many of your neighbors for our second Community Outreach Meeting this Tuesday, November 19th at 6:00 p.m. at the Monkton Central School, to review Bellwether’s initial design concepts and to add your thoughts. Once again, pizza and cold beverages will be served.
