State Wide Salt Shortage

Town of Monkton Highway Department
To our neighbors — We are alerting you that the town has been notified of a Sate wide road salt shortage and there will be no further deliveries of road salt to our supply for the foreseeable future. The Monkton Highway Department crew will conserve remaining material and focus treatment on primary routes and emergency access. As a result, secondary streets and low-traffic areas may not be treated as frequently or may take longer to clear after storms.
• Important: Due to a State wide road salt shortage, the town will not receive any additional salt supplies at this time.
• What this means: The Highway crew will use remaining stock sparingly and prioritize sections of main roads and emergency routes. Lower-traffic areas may receive reduced or delayed treatment.
• Limit travel in severe weather, use caution on untreated surfaces, clear private walkways with sand/ash/grit or rock salt substitutes, and avoid calling emergency services for non-emergencies.
• Questions or concerns: Contact Trevor Currier (road foreman) at The Monkton Highway Department at 802-453-3263 or email at highway@monktonvt.com or the Monkton select board at selectboard@monktonvt.com
• We are expecting higher than normal emails/call volumes so please bear with us.
Please take the following steps to help keep our community safe:
● Reduce nonessential travel during and immediately after storms.
● If you must drive, slow down and allow extra stopping distance.
● Make sure to leave early and give yourself plenty of extra time for travel
● Check on neighbors who may need help clearing walkways or driveways.
Report urgent roadway hazards to the Highway Department at (802)-453-3263.
For emergencies, call 911.
