Monkton New Town Offices and Library Status

It has been four months since the Town voted to build our new Town Offices and Library on the Monkton Ridge lot adjacent to the Friends Methodist Church and construction is finally about to begin.   The firm Naylor and Breen was hired in February to oversee construction and they have assembled a complete team of subcontractors and associated costs.  Naylor and Breen presented the Selectboard with an update to the current contract to include all of the construction costs and that contract was signed on July 13th.  The project remains on schedule and on or near budget.  Construction will begin August 10th preceded by a ground breaking ceremony at the site on Thursday August 6th at 6:30 (masks and social distancing required).  Continue reading

Selectboard COVID-19 Property Tax Relief Responses

The Monkton Selectboard, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, has several tools at its disposal to minimize the impact of municipal taxes.  The Vermont Legislature has passed S.344 which allows the Selectboard to reconsider aspects of the budget passed by the Town at Town Meeting and to waive some late payment penalties.  With the help of the Road Foreman, Ben Hollwedel, the Selectboard decided to forego road paving projects for this year and instead patch the roads using a ‘hot box’ of hot asphalt.  This one time change to the highway budget will result in a savings of $95,000.  The Town also intends to roll $30,000 of 2019 and 2020 new Town Hall and Library expenses into the Vermont Municipal Bond Bank bond.  The two together should result in $125,000 savings to the Town and a decrease in the Municipal Tax Rate by 4.89 cents.  This would move the Municipal Tax Rate from a projected rate of 0.4358 to 0.3869.  The final Municipal Tax Rate is set by the Selectboard in August when the Grand List is finalized. The Municipal Tax Rate is only about 20% of the total property taxes with the remainder coming from the Education Tax.

The Selectboard is also reviewing the Policy for Payment of Property Taxes.  In particular, the 8% penalty for late taxes is under consideration and is under active discussion at Selectboard Meetings.

Fireworks display in Monkton

We recently received word that a private individual is putting on a fireworks display in Monkton. He has received the required permits (the Select Board is not a part of the permitting process for fireworks displays).  The launch site is from Silver Street, a bit north of the Monkton Ridge. It shold be visible from various parts of town.  Here is the information we have at this time:

My Hometown area Fireworks, presented by Sean Beatty HVAC

Fireworks display for anyone and everyone. When the country is forced apart, independence day, brings us together. Lets not focus on what makes us different, and for one day, remember we are all Americans. We are all in this together, no matter who you are or where you are from.
